Title: Did Sony’s Playstation® Network leak the personal data of Macau users?

Reason: Active intervention

Brief:

There were several media reports which stated that the Sony Playstation® Network was hacked and some users’ personal data were compromised. As the incident may have involved the personal information of users, this Office (GPDP) took the initiative for investigation.

Analysis:

The GPDP sent a letter to Sony Computer Entertainment to enquire about the relevant issues.
The company responded, stating that the unlawful and unauthorised entry into the network and access of the user data occurred from the 17th to the 19th of April. There was no indication that the personal user information of any user in Macau had been compromised. Moreover, the target client base for the services provided by the PlayStation® Network does not include the residents of Macau and the personal data is not processed in Macau.
GPDP believed that there was no evidence that the incident involved processing or leakage of personal data of local users, the personal data processing was not carried out in Macau, under the terms of Articles no. 3 and 4 of the “Personal Data Protection Act” and other existing laws, the “Personal Data Protection Act” is not applicable to the present case.
